The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for La Nkwantanang-Madina, Ibrahim Fuseini Faila, has said the Assembly will intensify enforcement against unauthorised structures following the recent building collapse at Adenta.

According to the MCE, the Assembly has already demolished several illegal buildings and will continue clearing structures located in waterways and other high-risk areas in the municipality.

“There are plenty of these that we already started. Last two weeks we demolished about four structures. There are other buildings and even a church around the Dakobi River that are currently being pulled down,” he told the press on Thursday, June 4.

He explained that the demolition exercise actually began weeks before the Adenta incident, as part of a broader effort to remove buildings erected on water channels and flood-prone zones.

The MCE said the recent collapse highlights the dangers posed by poor planning compliance and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of physical development regulations across the country.

“Little did we know that something like this would happen. There are more buildings of this nature, not only in Madina but across the nation. We should ensure that the right thing is being adhered to,” he noted.

He added that the Assembly will not relent in its operations to curb illegal construction.

“So, that is what we are going to champion henceforth. We must ensure that the regulations are adhered to in order to protect lives and property,” he stressed.

“Automatically, we are going to embark on such project to bring everything to finality,” he added.

The Assembly maintained that sustained enforcement of planning rules will help reduce building collapses and minimise flooding risks linked to unauthorised developments.
