The Greater Accra Regional Chapter of the National Association of Registered Midwives–Ghana (NARM-GAR) has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a midwife at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, describing the incident as a disturbing attack on healthcare professionals and the healthcare system as a whole.

In a statement issued on June 5, 2026, the association said it had taken notice of a video circulating on social media which allegedly shows a relative of a patient physically assaulting and manhandling a midwife while she was performing her duties.

According to NARM-GAR, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, and highlights the growing threat of workplace violence against healthcare workers in Ghana.

The association noted that midwives play a critical role in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of mothers, newborns, families and communities, often working under challenging conditions to provide essential healthcare services.

“It is unacceptable that healthcare professionals, whose primary responsibility is to save lives, should become victims of physical assault, intimidation, verbal abuse and other forms of workplace violence,” the statement said.

NARM-GAR expressed concern over what it described as the increasing incidence of violence against nurses and midwives across healthcare facilities nationwide, warning that such attacks create fear and trauma among healthcare workers and can negatively affect service delivery and patient outcomes.

The association also expressed solidarity with the affected midwife and other healthcare professionals who have experienced violence in the course of their work, acknowledging the emotional and psychological impact such incidents have on victims, their families and colleagues.

NARM-GAR called on the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to publicly condemn the incident and take a firm stance against all forms of violence directed at healthcare workers.

The association argued that failure to speak out against such acts could embolden perpetrators and undermine efforts to ensure safe working environments for frontline health personnel.

It further urged the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, stressing that while patients and their relatives have the right to seek explanations or lodge complaints, no grievance justifies the physical assault of a healthcare worker.

Among its key demands, NARM-GAR called for a full investigation into the incident, appropriate legal action against anyone found culpable, strengthened security measures at health facilities across the country, and the development and enforcement of a national zero-tolerance policy on workplace violence against healthcare workers.

The association also advocated enhanced psychological support services for healthcare professionals who become victims of abuse and assault while carrying out their duties.

“The safety of healthcare workers must remain a national priority. Midwives, nurses, doctors and all healthcare professionals deserve to work in an environment that guarantees their security, dignity and professional respect,” the statement added.

NARM-GAR reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and safety of healthcare workers and emphasized that attacks on healthcare professionals ultimately undermine the entire healthcare delivery system.

“An attack on a healthcare provider is an attack on the entire healthcare system,” the association concluded.
