Hundreds of pupils from three private schools and thousands of residents in Oblogo within the Weija-Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, are suffering from bacterial infections due to the accumulation of uncollected refuse near their schools and homes.
The schools are Rising International School of Excellence, Brighter Vision School and Shalom Angels.
Onua News’ Akua Sarpomaa reports that dumping of refuse at the site started about eight months ago. The refuse dump was very close to the Densu river and as time went by, the refuse has entered the river which is very dangerous for those whose lives depend on the water body.

The pungent smell that fills the air in the nearby schools and the flies attracted by the refuse pose danger to the health of teachers, students and residents.
As a result, most of the teachers and pupils are diagnosed of bacteria infections when they visit the hospital.

Checks with the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit at Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly revealed that the matter is before the Weija-Gbawe District Court, which has ruled that effectively 1st April, 2026 dumping of refuse on the site should cease.

However, further investigations showed that even after the court ruling the dumping site is still operating.

During a phone conversation and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Felix Odartey Lamptey, on the issue, he stated that “me myself I’ve been stopping them not to dump refuse there so am surprised they are still going there”.
The MCE promised to stop the dumping of refuse at the site in due time.
