The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced that a total of 4,038 unregistered firearms were voluntarily surrendered to the Ghana Police Service under the government’s Gun Amnesty Programme.
According to the Minister, the outcome demonstrates the willingness of Ghanaians to support efforts aimed at improving public safety and strengthening firearms regulation across the country.
“I am pleased to report that this approach generated useful results. A total of 4,038 unregistered firearms were surrendered to the Ghana Police,” he stated at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The Minister said the success of the programme reflects the patriotism, sense of responsibility and civic commitment of citizens who chose to comply with the law rather than retain unlicensed weapons.
“This outcome reflects the patriotism, responsibility and civic commitment of Ghanaians who chose compliance over lawlessness,” he added.
The Interior Minister expressed gratitude to various stakeholders whose support contributed to the success of the initiative.
He specifically acknowledged traditional authorities, religious leaders, opinion leaders, civil society organisations, media institutions and community groups for their role in promoting awareness and encouraging participation.
“On behalf of the Government and His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, I extend sincere appreciation to our traditional authorities, religious and opinion leaders, civil society organisations, the media and community groups. Your advocacy and engagement were instrumental in bringing this initiative into homes and communities across our country,” he said.
The Gun Amnesty Programme (GAP) announced om November 18, 2025 is a nationwide initiative in Ghana led by the Ministry of the Interior, the Ghana Police Service, and the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) to reduce the proliferation of illicit and unregistered firearms.
It allows citizens to voluntarily surrender weapons without fear of arrest or prosecution.
The program initially ran from December 1, 2025, through January 15, 2026, and was officially extended until January 30, 2026, to allow citizens more time to comply.
