NADMO Weija-Gbawe has issued an urgent appeal to all residents along the Weija Dam spillway to move to higher ground immediately, as the dam’s management opens its spill gates to release excess water.

According to the notice, heavy inflows from the Nsawam area into the Weija Dam reservoir are threatening to exceed the dam’s maximum capacity.

To protect the integrity of the dam, management has opened three spill gates, each releasing water at 30 inches and at high intensity.

NADMO warned that communities downstream of the dam are likely to be inundated as a result of the spillage.

The disaster management agency stressed that residents in low-lying areas must leave immediately, without waiting to see floodwaters arrive before moving.

Residents must leave low areas immediately — don’t wait to see the water. Move to higher ground,” the notice said.

NADMO also called on residents to look out for vulnerable neighbours, including the elderly, children, and those without phones, urging people to knock on doors to ensure everyone is alerted in time.

Residents were advised to carry only essential items, such as identification documents, medicines, phones and chargers, cash, and key documents, preferably in a waterproof bag, and to avoid attempting to cross floodwaters under any circumstances.

Avoid crossing flood waters — 6 inches can knock you down. 2 feet can carry a car,” the agency warned.

NADMO listed several communities downstream of the dam as being at risk, including Tetegu, Weija, SCC, Old Barrier, Oblogo, Mallam Junction, Aplaku, Bortianor, parts of Dansoman, and parts of Sampah, urging residents in these areas to relocate without delay.
