Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, has highlighted Ghana’s admiration for Viet Nam’s remarkable economic transformation.
He further underscored the importance of continued collaboration within multilateral fora in promoting international peace, sustainable development and the interests of developing countries.
This came to light after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana, on Thursday, 2nd July 2026, hosted the Maiden edition of the “Ghana–Viet Nam Political Consultations” at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Accra.
The consultations, brought together Senior Officials from both countries to review bilateral relations, exchange views on Regional and International developments, and identify practical measures to deepen cooperation across key sectors.
Ghana’s delegation was led by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson (MP), likewise, the Vietnamese delegation, led by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, H.E. Mr. Lê Anh Tuấn.

In his opening remarks, Gyakye Quayson warmly welcomed his counterpart and the entire Vietnamese delegation to Ghana, and described the inaugural Political Consultations as an important milestone in the relations between the two countries.
He noted that the consultations coincided with the 60th anniversary of the historic peace mission undertaken by Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to Viet Nam, describing it as a lasting symbol of Ghana’s commitment to peace, solidarity and international cooperation.
He also stated that Ghana and Viet Nam had over the years built a strong partnership founded on mutual respect, sovereign equality and South-South cooperation, with collaboration spanning trade, agriculture, fisheries, education, technical cooperation and capacity building.
He indicated that the establishment of the Political Consultation mechanism would institutionalise regular dialogue, strengthen mutual understanding and provide a structured platform to review bilateral cooperation, exchange perspectives on regional and global developments, and identify new opportunities for collaboration.
On his part, H.E. Mr. Lê Anh Tuấn expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to the Vietnamese delegation and described the maiden Political Consultations as a significant step towards strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
He conveyed Viet Nam’s condolences to the Government and people of Ghana following the recent loss of lives caused by flooding.
H.E. Mr. Lê Anh Tuấn commended Ghana for her impressive achievements in economic diversification, improving the living standards of its people and its leadership role in promoting regional integration in Africa, and reaffirmed Viet Nam’s commitment to a foreign policy anchored on peace, friendship, cooperation, multilateralism and diversification of international relations.
The Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister emphasised that Ghana remains an important partner for Viet Nam in West Africa and expressed his country’s readiness to strengthen cooperation through government-to-government, parliamentary and people-to-people exchanges.
He noted the steady growth in bilateral relations, highlighting that trade between the two countries surpassed $1 billion in 2025, making Ghana Viet Nam’s fourth-largest trading partner in Africa. He further stressed the importance of closer cooperation in addressing common global challenges and enhancing the role of both countries in regional and international affairs.
Discussions during the consultations covered a broad range of issues including bilateral relations, political cooperation, exchange of high-level visits, economic, trade, investment and technical cooperation, as well as regional and multilateral issues.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation and expanding engagement in areas of mutual interest.
The inaugural Ghana–Viet Nam Political Consultations concluded with the signing of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Ghana and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam on Visa Exemptions for Holders of Diplomatic, Official and Service Passports, marking another significant milestone in the growing bilateral relations between the two countries.
The agreement is expected to facilitate official exchanges, strengthen institutional cooperation and further deepen the longstanding friendship between Ghana and Viet Nam.
