The Ashanti Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) received 1,208 complaints against Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL) during the period ending June 2026.
Nine hundred and seventy-eight (978) complaints, representing 81.29% were resolved.
Speaking to the media On Thursday, July 16, 2026 at Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations officer, Richard Asiedu, said, of the total complaints received, one thousand, one hundred and sixteen (1,116), accounting for 92.38%, we’re lodged against ECG, while ninety-two (92) complaints, constituting 7.61% were lodged against GWCL.
A total of GHC108,969.4 was received from utility companies as billing or payment adjustments, in favour of some consumers who reported their complaints to the Commission.
Additionally, GHC55,664.74 was recovered as revenue from defaulted consumers for the distribution utilities.
The Regional Office also facilitated the replacement of 12 Faulty Electric poles, 10 Faulty Transformers, and 9 Defective Energy Meters.
The region also assisted with the installation of 6 New Service Connections that had been unduly delayed and with the Repair of 30 Burst Pipes.
He explained that the sharp rise in complaints reflects the Commission’s expanded visibility and community engagement across the region.
“This increase is indicative of the Commission’s deliberate effort to enhance its presence through community monitoring, complaint clinics, stakeholder engagements and our dedication”, he said.
He said the complaints were related to billing issues, payment issues, quality of service, disconnection or unlawful disconnection, damage of appliances.
“The Regional Office facilitated a replacement of twelve electric poles, ten transformers, nine deficit energy meters. The office also assisted with installation of six new service connection that has been unduly delayed and also the repair of thirty bed pipes.
