President of the Botoku Traditional Council, Togbega Sei II, has called on all District, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives across the country to emulate President John Mahama by rendering regular account to traditional authorities in their respective jurisdictions.
The call comes in the wake of President Mahama’s recent “Resetting Ghana Tour,” during which he visited Ho, the Volta Regional capital, to engage stakeholders on ongoing development projects to foster transparency and accountability.
In a statement, Togbega Sei II, who is also a member of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, said the President’s direct engagement with the people during the tour sets a clear example that leadership must be accountable to the custodians of the land.
“Just as the President has set the example of accountability by coming to Ho and speaking directly to the people of Volta Region during the Resetting Ghana Tour, we expect our MMDCEs to also come before Traditional Councils and account to us,” he stated.
“Chiefs are custodians of the land and the people. When government and traditional authority work together, development will reach every community faster. It is time for MMDCEs to brief us on government programs, budgets, and projects in our jurisdictions.”
Togbega Sei II noted that regular accountability sessions with traditional leaders will promote transparency, foster unity, and ensure that government policies at the district level reflect local priorities, customs, and development needs.
He further appealed to the Volta Regional Minister and the Ministry of Local Government to institutionalize the practice to strengthen the partnership between government and traditional authorities nationwide.
According to the traditional leader, closer collaboration between MMDCEs and traditional leaders will not only deepen democracy but also accelerate development at the grassroots.
