The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has donated US$250,000.00 –about GHC3 million –to Ghana for the victims of the recent floods that devastated several parts of the capital and other places.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a post on his social media handles on Sunday, August 2, 2026, indicated that the funds would be handed over to the appropriate sector once it hits the Ministry’s account.
“I wish to announce, in the spirit of transparency and accountability, that the Foreign Ministry has just been notified by ECOWAS that they have decided to donate US$250,000.00 (about GHS3million) to Ghana for victims of the recent devastating floods.
“As can be expected, the Foreign Ministry will hand over the entire funds as soon as we receive it in our accounts,” portions of the post stated.
Mr. Ablakwa expressed the Government’s appreciation to the sub-regional bloc for the solidarity exhibited to the nation in times of such natural disaster.
“The Government of Ghana conveys boundless appreciation to ECOWAS for their solidarity and true African compassion.”
The donation follows the recent torrential rains that flooded several parts of the country, particularly in the Greater Accra, Central, and Western regions, claiming at least 12 lives and displacing hundreds.
Accra was the hardest hit area with key economic hubs like the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Kaneshie Market submerged, prompting emergency interventions.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross, National Fire Service, and the military deployed rescue boats to evacuate some residents who got stranded in the process.
The Government also activated a post-flood recovery and mitigation programme to restore normalcy and strengthen resilience against future flooding incidents.
Pending the commencement of the comprehensive permanent solution to the challenge, Government released GHC300 million from the Contingency Fund for flood relief and mitigation measures.
The funds were used for immediate relief efforts and financed flood mitigation measures to reduce future incidents.
President Mahama also directed that structures obstructing major waterways and wetlands be demolished to restore the free flow of storm water.
