The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced that the stretch from Obetsebi Lamptey through to Kaneshie First Light on the Darkuman-Kaneshie Highway will soon be closed to traffic for the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
He, however, did not give the exact date for the commencement of the project.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3news on August, the Mayor also indicated that maintenance work on the Kaneshie Footbridge has delayed due to the ongoing GARID project at Accra Academy Senior High School section of the highway.
According to him, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly cannot undertake major works on the road and footbridge until the GARID project is completed.
Mr Allotey therefore appealed to drivers and commuters to cooperate with the AMA, adding that additional traffic task forces will be deployed to direct traffic and minimize congestion during the period.
The execution of the GARID project has become necessary due to the devastation caused by the floods on June 29.
Experts say the completion of the project will improve drainage in Accra significantly, thereby reducing the effects of floods when they occur.
