Former Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has denied allegations of wrongdoing in connection with the award of scholarships during the previous NPP administration.
In a statement issued through his lawyers on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Dr. Agyemang said he executed his work as former Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat with utmost diligence and “therefore denies any wrongdoing.”
According to him, the claims being made against him by Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Sabah Zita Benson are only intended to “renew public ridicule” against him.
His lawyers said investigations into allegations of corruption surrounding scholarship awards during his administration have already been initiated by the appropriate state security and investigative agencies.
Kingsley Agyemang through his lawyers further criticised the High Commissioner for discussing the allegations publicly instead of allowing the relevant institutions to complete their investigations.
“The High Commissioner’s resort to the media to publicly berate our client rather than allowing the appropriate security and investigative bodies to discharge their mandate is regrettable and unwarranted,” the statement said.
Dr. Agyemang’s lawyers further alleged that the latest comments were not the first instance in which the High Commissioner had made what they described as “wild allegations” against their client while investigations remained pending.
“It is worthy of note that this is not the first time the High Commissioner is making such wild allegations notwithstanding the pendency of investigations by state security and investigative agencies.”
They stressed that Dr. Agyemang had made himself available to the relevant security agencies and had fully cooperated with investigations to ensure that the allegations were thoroughly examined.
According to the lawyers, their client remains committed to having the matter investigated to its conclusion and clearing his name.
They described Dr. Agyemang as a law-abiding citizen who remains focused on serving the people of Abuakwa South and committed to the rule of law and due process.
“Our client is a law-abiding citizen who remains focused on faithfully discharging the mandate entrusted to him by the good people of Abuakwa South and is firmly committed to the rule of law and due process,” the statement added.
The former Registrar, they added “remains confident that in the fullness of time, the truth will prevail, and he will be vindicated.”
Their response follows Zita Benson’s claim on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Wednesday, August 12 that Dr. Agyemang prior to leaving office gave UK scholarships to 189 students amounting to about £3.1 million or almost £3.2 million and added them as part of 2025/2026 academic year when he perfectly knew the NPP administration had left office.
“I was shocked because so far as I am concerned, this NDC government has not sent any student for 2025-2026 academic year. And 2025 was when NDC took office.
“So, I started my investigations and I found out that the previous Registrar has brought in 189 students amounting to about 3.1 million pounds or almost 3.2 million pounds and they were in various universities,” Zita Benson told TV3.
This amount, Zita Benson said had compounded to Ghana’s debt owed various UK universities.
