The Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr David Kofi Wuaku, has called for a broader approach to sports development, saying the sector must increasingly be viewed as a source of leadership, jobs and economic opportunities.
He believes the gradual increase in sporting activities across the country offers an opportunity for Ghanaians to participate actively in the sector and build careers beyond the traditional role of athletes.
Dr Wuaku made the observation during the 2026 Democracy Cup in Kumasi, where he highlighted the growing prospects within Ghana’s sports industry.
He said as sports continues to gain momentum, stakeholders must be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities emerging from the sector.
“Sports is gradually picking up,” he said, adding that the development should be seen as an opportunity for everybody to demonstrate leadership and contribute to the growth of the industry.
For Dr Wuaku, the future of Ghanaian sports cannot depend solely on athletes and coaches. He said administrators, entrepreneurs, sponsors, media professionals and other industry players all have important roles to play.
He therefore encouraged stakeholders to embrace the changing landscape and position themselves to contribute to a more organised and commercially viable sports industry.
The comments reinforce calls for increased investment and better management of Ghana’s sports ecosystem as the country seeks to harness the economic potential of sports.
The Ghana Sports Fund has been established to mobilise, manage and disburse resources to support the development of sports in Ghana.
