Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has dismissed suggestions that his criticism of the Ghana Goldbod losses and its operations is a personal issue against the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.
Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Christian Yalley on Monday, August 31, 2026, Afenyo-Markin explained that the Minority is not against the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme rather the implementation of the initiative by the current management which he says has caused the gold losses recorded.
“No. You are a media person, you have listened to all my interviews, you have listened to all my submissions on the floor. I have never on any occasion not even once mentioned any particular person’s name, no.
“I have always been talking about the institution and the contention of the Minority is that the implementation has not been good,” he stated.
According to him, his side wants an investigation into the operations of the GolBod, insisting that such a call is not a personal vendetta against Sammy Gyamfi.
“These are implementation challenges leading to these losses. It is not the initiative. We have said this initiative was a Dr. Bawumia initiative that introduce a Domestic Gold Purchase Programme so that you can use your gold to stabilize your economy.
“So if the IMF is saying that the implementation has led to these losses and we say we want to look into it, what is personal about this?” he questioned.
He further welcomed the call by the Majority Leader, James Agalga, to probe the gold losses.
In the view of Afenyo-Markin, this probe will bring closure to the issues relating to the losses.
“My simple answer is, I agree with him; let’s look at it. Why not? It will help all of us to understand the whole programme, so there should be no problem.
“The oversight by parliament, where all players will have an opportunity to speak to the issue, BoG, IMF, Auditor General, offtakers, the aggregators – we will be able to now confirm what exactly has become the bone of contention,” he noted.
