The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other countries that benefited from Ghana’s previous gold purchasing system are unhappy with the Domestic Gold Purchases Programme.
He says the policy which now gives the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) sole mandate to purchase all gold locally has cut off foreign actors who previously exploited the loose system.
According to him, the BoG’s Domestic Gold Purchases Programme is the sole policy that is making the country reap real benefits from its gold, making the other nations that were benefiting unsettled.
Speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, he indicated that the policy, which gives the Ghana Gold Board sole mandate to buy gold locally, is a good intervention that is being cited globally as a model.
“One good policy we have introduced is the Domestic Gold Purchases Programme which people are now aligning it with some controversies so that those against our progress as a nation will get the opportunity to infiltrate and disrupt,” he told host, JB.
He added that, “all over the world, they are citing Ghana as a good example.”
General Mosquito, as he is known in the political space, says the foreign actors who used to come into the country to purchase gold at will are displeased because the new arrangement has blocked their access and ensured the nation benefits directly.
“The other countries who benefited from the previous system aren’t happy at all. That is when anyone could come and purchase gold. But since we clamped down on it for the nation to make the purchases and benefit from it, they are not happy about it. The IMF is not even happy about it,” he stated emphatically.
The three-term former Member of Parliament for Wenchi West warned that manufacturing controversy around the programme will only give its critics ammunition to demand its dissolution.
“So they want us to introduce a controversy ourselves so they will have a cause for us to abolish it,” he said, advising that imperfections should not be used to discredit the entire policy.
“So my advice is that, where we have gotten to, other countries are envious of us and there is no system that is perfect. But if you want to get everything perfect, you’ll end up doing nothing. God even left the perfect beings in heaven and brought the sinners on earth. So you won’t get anything perfect.”
