The Ghana Digital Centres (GDC) has trained a total of 102 people under the 1 million coders initiative, offering trainees with digital skills development programmes.
Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Digital Centres, Dzifa Gunu, said the organisation trained 50 people under a pilot programme last year at its regional centre in Kumasi.
He noted that the pilot focused on key areas including data protection, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analysis, cloud computing and digital marketing.
According to him, the organisation continued the training this year, recording 26 participants through in-person sessions and another 50 through virtual training programmes.
“The training is such that the trainees select their preferred training centers. For in person this year, we have had 26 and then we have 50 virtual ones.
“In total, we have catered for 102 trainees,” Gunu said on TV3’s Daily Brief, Wednesday, September 9.
He explained that participants are given the opportunity to select their preferred training centres, while the organisation also provides virtual options to expand access to the programmes.
He described the numbers as encouraging despite challenges in expanding training centres across the country.
Dzifa Gunu noted that the Ghana Digital Centres was not the only institution providing digital skills training in the country, adding that the organisation was still working to establish additional training centres.
“To the extent that the Ghana Digital Centers is not the only training institution and because we are still struggling to put in place our other training centers, these numbers are very sufficient and encouraging,” he noted.
The Chief Executive, however, projected a significant increase in the number of beneficiaries before the end of the year.
“By the close of the year, I can assure you the numbers will double,” he stated, explaining that the organisation had just completed its latest cohort and was preparing to commence another.
Dzifa Gunu stressed that efforts were also underway to increase enrolment as Ghana Digital Centres seeks to broaden access to digital skills training.
