Officials of the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) have inspected the mortuary facility aboard the Global Mercy Ship currently docked at the Tema Port.
The inspection exercise was led by the Deputy Registrar of the Agency, Dr. Philip Sarpong.
According to Dr. Sarpong, the exercise was to assess the level of compliance and to ensure the facility is adhering to basic sanitary practices and standard operating procedures in the handling and preservation of human remains.
He explained that the inspection covered key areas including infrastructure, equipment, sanitation, record-keeping, as well as the appropriate handling and preservation of human remains.
Dr. Sarpong noted that the exercise forms part of MoFFA’s mandate to license, control and regulate all facilities connected with the storage, transportation and disposal of human remains in the country.
He said the Agency is mandated to ensure that mortuary facilities operate in an environment that protects public health and upholds the dignity of the deceased.
The Agency has commended the Management of the Mercy Ship for its level of compliance with national standards but says it will continue to engage them to ensure full adherence.
The Global Mercy Ship is currently in Ghana providing free surgical care and medical training.
