The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama, has said he resigned from the Board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago.
Dr Asiama says he no longer participates in meetings of the GoldBod Board.
He was responding to concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over his membership of the Board and whether his dual roles could create a conflict of interest.
The concerns, raised by former Finance Minister and Karaga Member of Parliament, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, at an NPP press briefing on September 1, focused on the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod, including the Bank’s involvement in financing gold purchases and reported losses under the domestic gold purchase programme.
Dr Asiama, responding to a question from a journalist during the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2026, disclosed that he had already stepped down.
“I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all,” he said.
He explained that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) does not require the Governor personally to serve on the Board.
According to him, the law provides for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official of the rank of director.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he said.
“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there,” he added.
