The Ghana Sports Fund has assured Ghana’s national boxing team, the Black Bombers, of institutional support to strengthen their preparations and improve performances in future competitions, raising fresh expectations about the country’s commitment to developing athletes beyond football.

The Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of the Fund, Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku, gave the assurance during a meeting with officials of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) and members of the national team ahead of their international amateur contest against Metro Detroit Golden Gloves.

Dr Wuaku described the establishment of the Fund as an opportunity to change the circumstances under which Ghanaian athletes prepare for and compete in international sporting events.

He observed that previous generations of boxers had competed without the benefit of such a dedicated funding facility, suggesting that the new institution could help address longstanding challenges in sports financing.

“Boxing is very important to Ghana, and the Sports Fund was instituted to support athletes, including boxers,” he said.

He urged the Black Bombers to remain disciplined in training and continue winning medals for Ghana, while expressing concern about the recent performances of some national teams.

The Administrator stressed that athletes who excel while representing the country would benefit from the Fund’s support.

He also highlighted boxing’s contribution to Ghana’s sporting heritage, including achievements at the African, Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

The presence of boxing legend Professor Azumah Nelson on the Ghana Sports Fund’s board, Dr Wuaku noted, offered an opportunity to strengthen institutional attention to the sport.

However, the Fund’s commitment comes with an emphasis on institutional collaboration. Dr Wuaku explained that engagements would be conducted through recognised sports federations rather than individual athletes.

The meeting was attended by a delegation led by veteran boxing consultant Yoofi Boham, alongside former Ghana Boxing Federation President and current International Technical Official George Lamptey, First Vice-President Nii Adama Addy and Treasurer Mustapha Nettey.

Coaches Vincent Akai Nettey, Elvis Robertson, Benjamin Tetteh and Martey were also present.

For the Black Bombers, the assurance offers an opportunity to improve preparation and performance under a new sports-financing framework. The extent of its impact will depend on how the commitment translates into practical support for training, competition, and athlete development.
