Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, says the Commission will operate an open-door policy where every Ghanaian will have the right to walk in to demand accountability.

He says every Ghanaian will have the right to walk to the Commission to demand accountability, provided such demands are based on law and best practices.

He made the pledge on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, with host JB, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following his swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Asamoah stressed that he will not give room for suspicions to fester about the Commission’s work.

“I won’t do anything to give room for people to say things because suspicions are there so let’s put everything on the table for all political parties to come on board so we dialogue for national interest and not any political party interest,” he said.

He explained that the approach will help strengthen the country’s democracy.

“We’ll operate an open-door approach where every Ghanaian will have the right to walk to the Commission to demand that we do things [right] but every demand must be predicated on law and best practices so that this country will grow from strength to strength and our democracy will be very healthy,” he noted.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Law lecturer added that his duty is to complement the work of the current managers of the Commission.

“The Commission over the years has acquitted itself creditably and I’m not here to indict any predecessor or current managers of the Commission. My only duty is to come and complement,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, October 12, 2026, swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission at the Jubilee House.

The two replace Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, who was in charge of Corporate Affairs and resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana, and Samuel Tettey, who was in charge of Operations and retired after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 65.

Dr. Asamoah is a lawyer, chartered accountant and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with over 17 years experience in electoral administration.

He previously served the EC as Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit and played a role in the 2012 and 2016 general elections.

Ms Agbenyo previously served as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service and as a Commissioner at the National Development Planning Commission.
