National Security operatives have arrested suspected illegal sand winners in Sewua in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region along the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway corridor.

The arrest follows a tip-off on sand winning activities in the area.

Gunshots were fired during the operation on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as the suspects reportedly attempted to flee upon seeing the operatives.

Our news team in Kumasi gathered that trucks and other equipment were impounded during the raid, while the suspects were taken to the Fourth Battalion of Infantry (4BN) for further investigations.

The arrests come as preparations continue for the construction of the proposed 198.7-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

The road project is yet to begin, although the Ghana Armed Forces has reportedly cleared the project’s right-of-way.

President John Dramani Mahama has said construction is expected to begin before Christmas 2026.

Details of the operation, including the number of suspects arrested and the specific allegations against them, were not immediately available.
