The Government has expressed shock and deep sorrow over the death of a second Ghanaian in New York within a week, following the killing of 24-year-old Joseph Owusu under yet-unexplained circumstances.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York said officials of the Mission, on the directive of the Head of Mission, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Samuel Yao Kumah, visited the family of the late Joseph Owusu to convey the condolences of the Government of Ghana.

The delegation was led by the Deputy Permanent Representative, Ben Dotsei Malor, and the Consul-General, Anthony El-Adas.

The family was informed of Joseph’s death by the New York City Police on Saturday, October 31. Police have told the family that an autopsy is being conducted on his body as investigations continue into the crime.

The bereavement visit was undertaken on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who phoned in to express heartfelt condolences, support, and solidarity of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to Madam Mavis, mother of the deceased, and her family.

“I have been shocked and saddened by this tragic news, especially coming on the heels of the horrible news of the killing of 15-year-old Javits, also in the Bronx, New York,” the Minister said.

He assured the bereaved family that the Government of Ghana stands firmly with them and will work with the relevant authorities and agencies of the United States Government to ensure that justice is served.

Joseph Owusu, a 24-year-old Ghanaian, worked as a caregiver, supporting persons with disabilities. He also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church.

He is remembered by the family as a beloved son and brother, and his tragic loss has left his family and community devastated.

His brother, Kwadwo, called strongly for justice for Joseph, through a thorough and transparent investigation to be conducted by the police into the circumstances surrounding his death and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
