The National Vice Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, has clashed with the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, in Akwatia.

The development escalated tensions in the early hours of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, when the by-election was ongoing, after the Minority Leader reportedly made an unannounced visit to the NDC’s constituency office.

Reports indicate the appearance of Afenyo-Markin and his entourage in the area sparked tensions when the teams comprising of party supporters and executives had a confrontation.

According to Azorka, Afenyo-Markin’s appearance at the scene was “highly disrespectful” and “provocative”, concluding that the visit was an attempt by the leader to intimidate the NDC faithful in the area.

Some NDC members further alleged that Afenyo-Markin’s entourage entered the office to remove posters of their candidate, where Azorka fumed and warned him not to do anything untoward.

“A by-election will be held in his [Afenyo-Markin’s] constituency if he tries anything,” he fumed.

The visibly infuriated Azorka added that: “What does he want here? Is he the NDC secretary? You people should talk to them.”

The NDC’s Vice Chairman accused the NPP of using the by-election as a testing ground for undemocratic strategies”, warning that the NDC would resist any such attempts.
