A wounded black kite, believed to have migrated from Brussels, Belgium and was rescued by a farmer at Assin Breku in the Assin North District of the Central Region, has passed away.
The black kite passed away while being transported to veterinary officers for treatment.
The bird, suspected to have been shot while preying on domestic chickens, was found in a weak condition by a 32-year-old farmer, Ebenezer Lativi.
A metal ring bearing the inscription “Museum Science, 1000 Brussel,” the website www.ring.ac, and a unique identification code H220252 were found on the bird, confirming its association with the Brussels Museum of Natural Sciences.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Assin North District, Sylvester Amakye-Nyarko, therefore directed that the bird be handed over to local veterinary officers for treatment and care.
But the bird died on the way to the veterinary office.
The DCE in an interview with Onua News’ Nsem Titire explained that the bird is being kept by the veterinary service in the district.
He said they are in talks with Belgium for further actions on the carcass.
Asked what they would do to the bird now that it is dead, Mr. Amakye-Nyarko said they are waiting for what Belgium authorities will direct them to do.
