The Police at Nkawie in the Ashanti region have prevented a suspected armed robbery attack on travellers along the Kumasi-Bibiani highway.

During an exchange of fire between the police and the suspected gang, one of the suspected robbers allegedly sustained gunshots and was sent to the Afari Community Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

A statement signed and released by the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Central Police Command, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, mentioned that, four other members of the gang managed to flee from the police, possibly with gunshot wounds.

The statement explained that, at about 7.30pm on Monday, June 2, 2025, the Nkawie Divisional Police Patrol Team, in response to a distress call, foiled an armed robbery attack on passengers traveling in two Sprinter buses between Ahwerewa and Esaase, along the Kumasi–Bibiani highway.

It stated five suspected armed men, one of whom was wielding a pump-action gun, had stopped the two vehicles at gunpoint and were in the process of robbing the passengers.

The police arrived timely at the scene. The statement observed that, upon sighting the police, the suspect with the pump-action gun opened fire on the patrol team.

The officers responded swiftly, returning fire and fatally wounding one of the suspects, who was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Afari Government Hospital.

The remaining four suspects fled the scene and are currently at large. It observed that the fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot wounds.

The statement is therefore appealing to all medical facilities and practitioners to be on the lookout and report any persons presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Afari Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and further investigation.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has commended the Nkawie Patrol Team for their bravery and professionalism in swiftly responding to the situation and averting what could have been a tragic incident.

The police are appealing to members of the public to continue supporting the Police by providing timely and relevant information to help maintain law and order.
