The Bafana Bafana of South Africa added to their medal haul in the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, February 10 after ending up with the Bronze Medal in this year’s tournament.

They beat DR Congo 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out after their 3rd place play-off ended goalless after 90 minutes.

The two sides failed to convert chances that came their way during the match, played at the Félix Houphouët Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, leaving Ethiopian referee Bamlak Tessema with no option than to bring hostilities to an end.

The match went straight to penalties and with DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba left to score in the final kick to win his side the Bronze Medal, South African goalie Ronwen Williams rose to the occasion like he did in the quarter-finals against Cape Verde.

He saved the last kick and did same in the sudden death to win the 3rd place for the 1996 champions.

The final between hosts Ivory Coast and three-time champions Nigeria is set to crown the tournament, which began on Saturday, January 13.

That match will be played at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara D’Ebimpé.
