The Members of Engineering Club of Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School in Trabuom in Ashanti Region, have built a new multipurpose drone designed for intelligence gathering, delivery, firefighting and marine patrol.
According to club members, the drone can also be deployed for surveillance, border patrol, and other security-related operations.
The project was led by the club’s lead engineer and tutor, Sir Ferdinand Sam, who disclosed that the drone was solely built by the students as part of their Aerospace practicals.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Sir Sam said the first test flight of the drone has been successfully conducted on the Suhum By-pass Road.
He observed that the test flight provided valuable lessons, with the club now taking steps to upgrade the drone for more effective operational use.
“The drone has a wingspan of 4 meters, length of 3.5 meters, 1.4 meters height, coming with 19.5 kilograms weight. Leading the students, we built the drone from scratch, and the idea is to develop solutions to our everyday problems in the country,” he said.
He stressed that the innovation demonstrates the immense potential of Ghanaian students when given the needed practical exposure and support in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
