Vice President and flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined his plans for agriculture should he be elected President in the upcoming December polls.

With his plan of making agriculture his topmost priority, the economist says he will adopt best practices from abroad to ensure Ghana gets greater yield from its investment in the sector.

During a courtesy call on Sandem-Nab, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow II, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, as part of his campaign tour Friday, July 26, 2024, Dr. Bawumia declared that he will emulate the practices of Brazil and China in crop production.

He also promised to put up District Agricultural Mechanisation centres across farming districts, providing affordable equipment to expand production.

“Agriculture is going to be my number one priority. We will make sure that we have all the different pillars in place for farmers.

“I want to bring in the best practices from countries like Brazil and China that have higher productivity in crops such as maize and rice. We want to also learn from them to adopt some of those technologies that are giving them two or three times the yields per acre that we are doing.”

Meanwhile, the Vice President expressed the need for Ghana to dwell on lime fertilisers due to the availability of limestone in the country, highlighting the ramifications of using chemical fertilisers on Ghana’s soil.

“I want Ghana to move away from chemical fertilizers for our soil to lime. Lime is the way forward. We have limestone in Ghana and it is much cheaper than the fertilizer, and we want to help the farmers with this new soil fertility treatment through lime,” he added.
