Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
Chairman Wontumi appeared at the CID Headquarters around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Wontumi’s appearance follows a warning issued by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, on Friday, October 3, 2025, that he would be arrested if he failed to report, as charges against him had already been signed.
The investigation is linked to Akonta Mining Limited, a company associated with the NPP regional chairman, which is under probe for alleged illegal mining activities.
According to the Attorney-General, progress on the case had stalled because key dockets were allegedly concealed under the previous administration.
Meanwhile, counsel for Wontumi, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, expressed disappointment with the Attorney-General saying there was no need for him to have issued that caution since he and his client had always cooperated with the investigations.
“We have been asked to appear at the police CID in Accra, which we are ready for and we will be there at 10 a.m. at the police CID headquarters.
“This announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. I said, we respect the invitation and we will honour it, but I think the warning that followed that announcement was unnecessary,” he said, adding, “We are not in any way going to disrespect the invitation.”
