President John Dramani Mahama has warned that a repetition of the Akosombo-Kpong Dams spillage will cost the Chief Executive of the VRA and his deputies their job.

This followed a probe into the 2023 water spillage conducted by the Volta River Authority (VRA) which rendered many residents along the Lower Volta Basin homeless.

The President says he has directed the implementation of recommendations from the probe to prevent such a man-made disaster from reoccurring.

During his address to the nation on his first 120 days of social contract with Ghanaians on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, President Mahama indicated that implementing the downstream engineering flood prevention recommendations made by the committee, chaired by a former VRA Chief Executive, will prevent such incidents from happening again.

The President did not mince words on the repercussions of a recurrence, saying that those at the helm of affairs will sacrifice their jobs if they fail to implement the committee’s recommendations.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we promised to initiate a probe into the VRA-Akosombo-Kpong Dam spillage to address the man-made disaster caused by the VRA spillage and prevent future occurrences.

“We promised to initiate a probe and take steps to compensate the victims. This administration set up a committee chaired by Engineer Kirk Koffi, a former VRA Chief Executive. The Committee has recommended strategies to prevent future occurrences including establishing what is called a controlled-spilled-flood-plan and implementing downstream engineering solutions for flood management.

“I’ve directed that the recommendations be implemented immediately. I further indicated that if they are not properly implemented and another destructive VRA flooding occurs like in 2023, the VRA CEO and Deputies must resign or be sacked,” stated President Mahama.
