The Queen mother of Battor in the Volta region has emphasised the impact of the Akosombo flood disaster on women and children in her vicinity.

Mama Asieku IV says pregnant women have been hugely affected by the impact of the spillage –floods –which needs an urgent attention.

She made the call when Social Activism for Women (SAW) group visited the region to show compassion by donating various relief items to the victims of Mepe who have been affected by the dam spillage.

This group, comprising media personalities, is dedicated to advocating for the most vulnerable members of society, particularly women and children who often lack a voice.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who received the items on behalf of his constituents, also used the occasion to call for the government and the Volta River Authority (VRA) to swiftly address the Akosombo flood victims’ situation.

He said the disaster was a consequence of actions by the VRA and therefore “I urge the government to incorporate compensation plans in the upcoming budget to be presented in Parliament.”

A member of SAW, Afia Kwarteng Asamani, mentioned that the group collected items such as clothing for men and women, diapers, and more and distributed to the victims.

“These donations came from generous Ghanaians who were moved by the group’s social media campaign,” she said.

A member of SAW group, Nana Adwoa Owusu highlighting the impact of the disaster on the education stressed that “swift action should be taken to ensure the well-being of the affected students.”

Other members, Lily Afia Oforiwaah Ofori and Yaba Sarfo assured that “SAW remains committed to assisting women and children facing challenges.”
