To solve the perennial flooding of the Atafoa bridge in Kumasi which renders it impassable and associated consequences to users, government has reconstructed it.
Commissioning the bridge on November 26, President Akufo-Addo said the intervention represents safety, accessibility, and opportunity.
Between 2022 and 2023, ten persons lost their lives whilst attempting to cross the flooded Atafoa bridge.
The bridge links Kumasi to Offinso and the northern part of the country. Several appe als by users for government to fix the deadly bridge has finally been responded to.
“Living around this area has been a struggle because of accessibility, especially when it rains. The completion of this project has brought a huge relief to us”, Nana Kwabena Bonsu, Otumfuo Suaduhene stressed.
President Akufo-Addo has commissioned the completed 40-metre reinforced concrete bridge for use.
He asked Ghanaians to decide prudently in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
“One of the most consequential decisions that Ghanaians are going to make in this generation is the decision that is going to be made in December. Especially, when you consider the two leading candidates and what they have to offer Ghanaians. We have a responsibility to persuade the Ghanaian people to make the right choice. The only choice is Mahamudu Bawumia”, President Akufo-Addo noted
Road and Highways Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye indicated that, the bridge and the accompanying road rehabilitation works are tangible examples of government commitment to delivering infrastructure that directly addresses the need of the people.
“We are unveiling a bridge that will serve as a lifeline, an enabler of economic growth, a solution to a longstanding challenge, and a symbol of government’s commitment to connecting people, places, and opportunities”, Francis Asenso-Boakye stated.
The Atafoa bridge forms part of rehabilitation of the Abrepo junction – Barekese – Offinso road which commenced in April 2023.
