President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sacked the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dr Dodzie Numekevor, from his role.

According to Onua Sports sources at the Jubilee House, the seat of government, the decision takes immediate effect.

President Akufo-Addo is said to have decided to relieve the Director General of his post following disturbing reports about the poor state of the country’s football pitches.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium became the topic of discussion after the Black Stars 1-0 loss to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Consequently, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew approval for the stadium in Kumasi from hosting Black Stars games, asking the country’s sport-governing body to get an alternative venues for the next two home qualifiers.

The Confederation, however, promised to offer Ghana the services of an expert to supervise the improvement of all pitches at the country’s top stadia.

CAF to send pitch expert to assist improve Ghana stadiums

This did not go down well with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, whose head instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to get CAF to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Sports Stadium for the Black Stars’ use.

Before this was even considered, the NSA is reported to have instructed the closure of all major stadia for renovation works.

This is to get venues for consideration of CAF Category 3 games.

This may have triggered the decision by the President to dismiss the NSA boss.

Dr Dodzie Numekevor was appointed as the interim Director General of the Authority on Monday, February 26, following the departure of Professor Peter Twumasi, who served in the role for six years.
