President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has failed in the fight against galamsey because his own persons are involved, John Dramani Mahama, has opined.

The former president says the community mining which has become a shadow for illegal mining is being undertaken by District Chief Executives (DCEs) and NPP party executives which makes it difficult for the president to take action against them.

He told Alfred Ocansey on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Monday, September 12, 2022 that the bizarre nature of the development and.how matters have exacerbated over the years without.concrete action makes it a pity.

He said talk is cheap and the actions of the president are louder than his words when he put the presidency on the line regarding the menace.

John Mahama noted evidence of the illegality abound but action cannot be taken because of the persons involved.

“All their party executives have concessions and are doing illegal mining in forest reserves. It’s a pity. But it’s close home and that’s why he can’t deal with it. If you go to the districts they talk about community mining. Community mining it’s the NPP party executives and DCEs who are doing community mining. So how can you expect him to fight galamsey when his own people are involved in it.”

“It makes very nice verbiage when you talk about it and actions speak louder than words. Our river bodies are still the coffee colour that they were. Maybe they were milo before now. They’re coffee, getting darker. They all know who are doing it. The changfan machines are there. It’s not something that you can put in a handbag and walk and go and do it here. They put it there and so how come you can’t find all the changfan machines that are washing all that mud into the river bodies,” he quizzed.
