The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, took its ongoing decongestion exercise to the Neoplan Station at Nkrumah Circle, as part of measures to ease congestion in the capital.

The exercise focused on clearing unauthorised structures where street vendors were cleared, with sanitation and traffic regulations enforced in the area.

Officials have maintained that the goal is aimed at improving both pedestrian and vehicular movement to advance compliance with city planning regulations.

The exercise was started on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, with authorities clearing makeshifts and items displayed on the roads and walkways around the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka known by many as the hotspots for street vending and traffic congestion.

Traders and commuters have been implored by authorities to cooperate fully with the taskforce to avoid confrontations.

The AMA has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the exercise, aiming to make Accra cleaner, safer, and more accessible for all residents.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has said that the items seized during the decongestion exercise in the Central Business District would be donated to the Ghana Prisons Service.

He said such seized items were previously auctioned and would no more continue but rather be donated to the prisons.
