The chiefs and residents of Anlo in the Volta region have petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to name the Member of Parliament who made disparaging remarks about Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
The Klottey Korley lawmaker, during parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, February 04, 2025, was told by a voice in the chamber to “shut up—you daughter of a murderer.”
When the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who was on the floor at the time turned back to his caucus and signaled the person to stop, another voice said there is evidence that Zanetor’s father killed people.
The comments, directed at the lawmaker, according to the Council, is “defamatory and obscene” and has asked the Speaker to provide the person behind it before they take their next line of action.
Meanwhile, some two MPs — Samuel Abu Jinapor, MP for Damongo, and Nana Kwame Asafo-Adjei, MP for Bosome Freho — who were initially suspected of making the statement, have both denied knowledge of the comments.
The Council expressed its displeasure with the development in the Wednesday, February 05, 2025 petition to the Speaker, highlighting the enormity of the insult contained in the comments.
The petition also shed light on how the Council sees Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings because her father hails from their land, tagging the incident as an attack on late President Rawlings’ legacy.
Reiterating the need not to let such comments go unaddressed, the Council has given the Speaker a February 10, 2025, ultimatum to come out with the culprit to decide on its subsequent steps on the matter.
