The lead sponsor for the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, Samuel Nartey George, is alleging that the Chief Justice (CJ) is deliberately delaying the ruling on the bill for a purpose.

He alleges Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornu, the CJ, does not want to expedite the ruling for Akufo-Addo to assent to the bill before leaving office.

The Supreme Court, after a deliberation on the matter for over 8 months, set Wednesday, December 18, 2024, as the date to rule on the cases. But according to Sam George who says the President did not want the bill to be passed

, and therefore doesn’t want to sign, is using the Chief Justice to delay the ruling so he will avoid signing it to become law.

President Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Torkornoo

Speaking on the BigIssue on TV3’s NewDay Wednesday, November 20, 2024, the Ningo Prampram lawmaker accused the President of being a proponent of LGBTQ which is against the customs of the country.

“The Chief Justice is trying to delay for Akufo-Addo to leave so he doesn’t sign [the anti-gay bill]. Our children and their children will remember Akufo-Addo as the man who lied to God that he will build Him a cathedral, meanwhile he loves gay people, and is supporting homosexuality and is against our culture. That is Akufo-Addo’s track record,” he alleged.

The anti-LGBTQ/Gay bill, formally known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, sponsored by Sam George and other MPs, is a proposed law in Ghana that introduces wide-ranging restrictions on LGBT+ rights.

On February 28, 2024, Parliament approved the bill and is pending effect until it is assented to by the President. However, the bill is still in Parliament and has not been transferred to the presidency as a result of some suits challenging the legality.
