The Member of Parliament for Builsa North, Dr. Clement Apaak, has asked President Akufo-Addo to be ready for the consequences, should he sacrifice the will of Ghanaians at the expense of threats from development partners in relation to the Anti-LGBTQ Bill.

The legislator has warned that Ghanaians are going to hold the President accountable should he fall for the threats being given by the State’s development partners.

His comments come on the back of a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on the possible implications of the Anti-LGBTQ Bill from Ghana’s development partners should the President assent to it.

The Ministry is urging President Akufo-Addo to hold off on signing the bill into law as it may cost the country greatly.

These risks include a potential loss of $850 million in budgetary support from the World Bank this year alone.

In the 5-page document, the Ministry explained that “for 2024 Ghana will lose US$600 million Budget support and US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund.”

“This will negatively impact Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate stability as these inflows are expected to shore the country’s reserve position.

In an exclusive with TV3’s Komla Klutse in Parliament Monday, March 04, 2024, Dr. Apaak said Akufo-Addo’s failure to assent to the document will suggest the entire New Patriotic Party (NPP) together with its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, support LGBTQI.

“If the President is going to sacrifice what his people who elected him into office want in exchange for a threat, and I say threat by not getting financial support from the IMF, we wait to see. I can guarantee you.

“If the President fails to do the needful, clearly, Ghanaians are going to hold him accountable. And the conclusion as far as Ghanaians are concerned is going to be simple, that Akufo-Addo, the NPP, its Presidential candidate Bawumia, are in favour of LGBTQI activities in the Republic of Ghana,” he said.
