Deputy Ranking Member on the Human Rights Committee of Parliament, Anthony Mwinkaara Sumah, says the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill before the House does not seek to criminalise people living their private lives.

In an interview with Eric Mawuena Egbeta on 3FM Sunrise on October 21, the Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo says the committee will reconsider the current bill to ensure that nobody’s rights are violated when the bill is passed.

“I’m not sure the bill sought to criminalise people living their private lives. We will look at it through a critical human rights lens and recommend. And I can assure you that we will ensure that nobody’s rights are violated.

He also hints that “after the engagement with individuals who have sent memoranda to the committee, a lot of significant changes have been made to the bill.”

The Deputy Ranking Member on the Human Rights Committee of Parliament again stated that “if certain elements within the bill could potentially infringe upon rights, it presents an opportunity to review and refine those aspects to ensure balance and fairness before it receives presidential assent”.

The Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill, which could be assented to by the previous administration, is expected to be laid before Parliament today, October 21, 2025.
