John Mahama’s words as he commenced his campaign of the Eastern region was that Ghana’s problems have exacerbated beyond repairs because the NPP government has failed to accept responsibility.
Akufo-Addo and Bawumia, according to Mahama, have always absolved themselves of the challenges of the country and tried to shift blame on others.
One of the key attributes of leadership, according to Mahama, is accepting responsibility for challenges and devising means to resolve them. However, he says that has not been part of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia’s leadership who have blamed everyone else for their predicaments but themselves.
Speaking to some constituents in the Nsawam Adoagyiri constituency on November 18, 2024, the former President said Akufo-Addo and Bawumia blamed him for all their failures in their first term until Covid-19 and the Russian-Ukraine war took over.
He expressed explained how he took responsibility as a leader at the time Ghana was plunged with intermittent power outages and resolved the problem without blaming his predecessors despite the challenge being a generational one which had developed from Rawlings’ era to his time.
“One of the first principles in leadership is taking responsibility. The negative thing about this Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, is that they never accept responsibility. If anything is going wrong, it is somebody’s fault. So in their first four years, they blamed Mahama for everything they got wrong.
“In 2020, people began complaining about their constant blaming of Mahama for their failures so they shifted to Covid-19 and blamed it for every mistake. By the grace of God Russia-Ukraine also started a war and whatever went bad was attributed to Russia-Ukraine.
“Any government that cannot take responsibility cannot solve our problems. You must be able to say that you were elected to fix these challenges and will accept responsibility for fixing them,” he stated.
