Some traders at the Sokoban-Apayoo high-tension clashed with a taskforce from the Atwima Kwawoma District Assembly during a recent decongestion exercise.
The operation aims to clear unauthorised traders and structures congesting the Apayoo high-tension thoroughfares.
Task force members were seen engaging with traders, removing their shop gates and urging them to vacate the spaces. But the traders, voiced their frustration, citing the lack of alternative livelihoods.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9fm in Kumasi with Sir John on July 25, some of the traders said, “we are upset because we were not given enough notice to relocate, and many rely on the busy streets around the market to earn their living.”
The tensions rose quickly as the official attempted to clear the area, leading to heated arguments.
The traders said that’s where they get their daily bread, and enough notice should have been given. “We’re just trying to survive, “Where do they expect us to go?”
This tension highlights a long-standing dilemma: livelihoods versus law and order.
According to the traders, they have been asked to vacate the place so that a businesswoman can operate a lorry terminal at the high-tension area.
