Martin Luther Kpebu has asserted that the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, “is being too political” with the way Democracy Hub protestors were treated by the police.
He says the manner with which the demonstrators were arrested Sunday, September 22, 2024, coupled with their two-week detainment, is only an act by the IGP to protect the President.
Some persons who stormed the streets to express their displeasure over the ongoing illegal mining also known as ‘galamsey’ were arrested and detained by the police for causing destruction to State properties.
The suspects, who were put before court have been remanded for two more weeks, a development many have criticised, considering the devastating levels of destruction caused by galamsey which the people were protesting against.
Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 Tuesday, September 24, 2024, he described the arrests as political, calling for the IGP to resign for the maltreatment given to the protestors.
“He is being too political. Who is he defending? President Akufo-Addo? Akufo-Addo is already down. Akufo-Addo has failed. Ghanaians have given their verdict.
“So, why is IG continuing being so political, being more Catholic than even the Pope? This is the worst President we’ve had who said he will put his presidency on the line, he ended up being sloganeering so why is the IGP Dampare defending him, why is Madam Andoh-Kwofie defending?” he quizzed.
Mr. Kpebu asked that the IGP resign with his Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Faustina Agyeiwaa Kodua Andoh-Kwofie, for also failing to prosecute Akonta Mining Company on its galamsey activities.
He says the company which belongs to the Ashanti regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as ‘Wontumi’, is involved in illegal mining, documents of which have been sent to the police but have failed to prosecute the matter since.
