Just hours after a deadly crash in Amanase claimed eleven lives, another tragic accident has occurred at Ayaase in the Ashanti Region, leaving eight people dead.
The fatal head-on collision between a Mercedes Sprinter bus and a VIP Grandbird bus happened on Tuesday, April 22, along the Bekwai-Fomena highway near the ECG office at Adansi Dompoase.
Preliminary assessment by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) indicate that the Sprinter bus (GS 6383-20), carrying 23 passengers from Kumasi to Assin Fosu, attempted to overtake a Toyota Corolla (GE 7271-24) but instead collided head-on with an oncoming VIP Grandbird bus (GW 8455-23) traveling from Takoradi to Kumasi.
The impact forced the VIP bus to veer off the road, tragically striking and killing two female pedestrians; 16-year-old Lordina and her 4-year-old sister, Kandra.
Six passengers aboard the Sprinter bus (four men and two women) died on the spot. Several others, including the VIP bus driver, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Fomena Government Hospital and St. Benito Hospital in Dompoase.
The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at Adiembra Peace Land Mortuary for autopsy and identification.
This latest tragedy comes amid growing concerns over reckless overtaking and speeding on Ghana’s highways.
The NRSA has reiterated calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent further loss of lives.
