An aspiring National Democratic Congress (NDC) Obuasi East Constituency Organizer in Ashanti Region, Alhaji Yahaya Alhaqq, has expressed his disappointment in party leaders for what he describes as their failure to take action following the military shootings involving small scale miners in Obuasi.
The incident claimed eight lives in January,2025.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9fm in Kumasi with Sir John, on Thursday, September 10,2026, he further hinted that, growing anger among the youth in Obuasi on the issue could lead to major uprising if their concerns are not addressed promptly.
The youth in Obuasi are not happy about the way our party leaders are handling the issue. Many people have lost their lives, others injured. The affected ones are the bread winners of their family. They expect our party leaders to do something on the issue for them, but nothing is coming from them.
Alhaji Yahaya Alhaqq, who is currently, the NDC Communications Director for Obuasi East, called for justice and compensation for victims of a clash between members of the small scale and the military security of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA).
He appealed to the government and AGA to convene a roundtable discussion within a week to resolve the matter.
He warned that failure to do so would compel the miners to seek alternative measures.
He also called for proof regarding the alleged shooting of a military officer, as claimed by AGA, and expressed frustration over the lack of progress on compensation for the victims, which the government reportedly directed AGA to provide.
