Security consultant, Richard Kumadoe has stated that the safety of Ghanaians living or travelling in Burkina Faso is the responsibility of the Burkinabè authorities.
He stressed that this is precisely why Ghana maintains diplomatic representation in the neighbouring country.
Mr Kumadoe’s comments follow confirmation by the Government of Ghana of a terrorist attack on a truck transporting Ghanaian tomato traders in northern Burkina Faso.
According to information from Burkina Faso, the traders were travelling through the town of Titao on Saturday, February 14, 2026, when their vehicle came under attack.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including possible casualties and injuries, are yet to be officially confirmed.
In response to the development, Ghana’s Embassy in Burkina Faso has begun engaging local authorities to obtain detailed information.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 15, the Embassy said it is coordinating efforts to visit the attack site to ascertain the identities and condition of any Ghanaians involved.
Officials further assured that steps are being taken to establish the facts and provide the necessary support to affected individuals and their families.
Speaking on Onua FM on February 16, Kumadoe emphasized that when Ghanaian citizens travel abroad, their country’s embassy serves as the first point of contact in times of distress.
“As a Ghanaian, whenever you travel into another country, your first point of contact is supposed to be your embassy,” he stated.
He explained that embassies are not merely symbolic institutions but serve critical roles in ensuring the safety, security guidance, and welfare of citizens abroad.
“The embassies are not just there; they are there for security and risk guidance. They engage local authorities and provide direction to citizens, especially in high-risk areas,” he added.
The attack has renewed concerns about the security situation in parts of northern Burkina Faso, where extremist activities have been reported in recent years.
