Ayalolo buses are set to begin operating a pilot Contra-Flow Bus Priority System from Tuesday, September 29, 2026, as part of government ‘s efforts to ease traffic congestion and improve public transport movement across the Greater Accra Metropolis.
The initiative, being implemented by the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), will introduce dedicated contra-flow arrangements on four of the city’s most congested corridors to enable Ayalolo buses to move more efficiently during peak traffic periods.
At a press briefing on Monday, September 28, 2026, at the Ministry of Local Government’s conference room in Accra, the Managing Director for GAPTE, Awudu Dawuda, said this pilot follows a joint traffic simulation exercise involving GAPTE, the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the Department of Urban Roads, the Ministry of Transport and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
According to him, the intervention is also intended to support the Government’s Reset Agenda and the 24-Hour Economy Policy, recognising the critical role of efficient public transportation in enabling workers to move safely and affordably at different times of the day.
Mr Awudu expressed GAPTE’s appreciation to the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga (MP), for his role in advancing the initiative and recognising that traffic congestion extends beyond a transport challenge to become a local governance and productivity concern, particularly for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
He also lauded the Minister for providing the policy direction and facilitating coordination among the Assemblies and relevant stakeholders along the four selected corridors, contributing to the commencement of the pilot.
The Contra-Flow Bus Priority System is expected to provide useful lessons on improving public transport efficiency and traffic management, with the pilot serving as an opportunity to assess its effectiveness and inform future interventions.
