The Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has cut sod for the construction of an astroturf sports stadium for the Upper West Region’s premier University, SDD-University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD –UBIDS).
The “sportstainment” event, which took place on Monday, August 26, 2024, at the WAC-SRT Center of the University, saw in attendance several dignitaries, including former players of Ghana’s National Team Black Stars led by Tanado Stephen Appiah, University management, and NDC party in the region.
Giving an overview of the project, Chief Executive Officer of Wembley Sports Construction Company Limited, Robert Coleman, the company contracted to transfer the structural and architectural drawing of the project onto the ground, said the project is in three phases and will have a standard pitch size of 110 X 75m, with FIFA standard accepted grass, floodlights installed and a balustrade fence wall as its first phase.
Phase two of the project will add up public washrooms, about 8-running tracks, changing rooms with washrooms, and turnout gear lockers.
Phase three will complement the entire project with a car park, spectator stands, a 25-number VIP Stand, and a multi-purpose court, among others.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Emmanuel K. Deribile, expressed joy for the kind gesture of the speaker for coming to the aid of the University.
At a similar event, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. A.S.K. Bagbin, also commissioned a FIFA standard Astroturf at McCoy College of Education in the Nadowli–Kaleo District in the Upper West Region.
The state-of-the-art facility, complete with floodlights, coaches’ benches, fencing, and an inner perimeter, among others, is set to transform sports and recreational activities in the area.
He underscored that the project is part of his broader vision to improve the quality of life in the region at large through various developmental initiatives.
The former lawmaker for Nadowli–Kaleo Constituency, underscoring the importance of the project, said the magnificent facility was made possible through his office with the support from Ghana Gas and Wembley Sports Construction as part of his commitment to community development and sports growth.
The McCoy College edifice to most sports lovers, will revolutionize sports development in the region while serving as a hub for local athletes to be natured. It will also host competitive matches and accommodate community events.
Right after the commissioning ceremony for the world-class astroturf in Nadowli, in the Upper West Region, a friendly match was held between ex-Black Stars players known as the “Stephen Appiah 11” and the “Bagbin 11”.
The match ended with “Bagbin 11” winning convincingly with a score of 7-2 over “Stephen Appiah’s 11”.
