Dr. Richard Baah Amoako of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is calling for the Majority Leader to be investigated and expunged from Parliament if an allegation being leveled against him is true.
Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader, who is also the Member of Parliament for Efuttu, according to Dr. Baah Amoako, has been accused by a former Chief Justice of being involved in ballot stuffing which he says needs to be investigated.
The political science lecturer who is also a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is the likes of such allegations that have destroyed the party, leading to its humiliating defeat in the just ended elections.
During a discussion on the outcome of Saturday’s polls on TV3 Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Dr. Baah Amoako said allegations such as this which the party failed to probe and hold the culprits accountable, if any, is what constituted to the party’s defeat.
The former aspirant for National Chairman of the NPP was talking about how the party can mend the pieces to come back stronger, when he cited the incident as one of the allegations amongst many that characterised the party leadership to bring it to this state.
He told Roland Walker, who was hosting the morning session of Ghana Decides 2024 coverage extension that if Afenyo-Markin is found guilty of the allegations, he should be sanctioned and ousted from Parliament because the act is criminal and undermines the integrity of governance.
“Former Chief Justice made an allegation that Afenyo-Markin was involved in ballot stuffing. This is a serious charge. Have you heard anybody talking about it? We should not allow this to go away just like that.
“Even though it is in my party, if it is true, he should be dealt with and actually be removed from Parliament because it is criminal. He is bringing down the integrity of our governance,” he charged.
He said the allegation is part of the reasons which warrants a change of name for the party for it to be reformed.
The political scientist mentioned the likes of Wontumi and others whose comments over the years have not been beneficial to the party saying they all need to be kicked out of the NPP in its reforms which includes changing the name of the party.
“You’ve done enough. Now do you think if you form a party and this person (Afenyo-Markin) is in it, he is going to stop? No! Wontumi tells you there are one thousand ways of winning elections. Elections and what? What are the 999? So we should not have such people in the party to misbehave all the time,” he added.
