The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has noted that despite the challenges confronting the education sector, the government deserves commendation for the successes sustained.

According to him, the flagship Free Senior High School, although, has some challenges, results that have churned out since its implementation vindicates the government on the issue of low quality which many associated with the policy.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister at a Media General-Star Ghana Foundation policy dialogue on the theme; Towards Transformative Basic Education Outcomes: Progress, Problems and Prospects, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, noted that, implementation of policies such as the One-Teacher One-laptop among others, have contributed to improving education in the country.

He indicated that the government’s priority was to ensure that the three key components of “access, quality and relevance” were attained.

“When access increases the general template is that quality decreases. We are not where we want to be but we are also not where we used to be. So we need to look back at what we have done and pat ourselves,” he stated, adding that the improvement in the performance of students in the Free SHS era confirm what has been achieved over the years.

“Data from WASSCE clearly show that there has been consistency and significant improvement,” he noted.

Kwarteng was confident the dialogue was giving to provide the medium to bring to bare more challenges confronting the sector and how they can improve on them.
