2024 flag bearer aspirant of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has pulled out of the party’s ongoing ‘Thank You’ tour following the stabbing of one of his supporters.
He has cited security threats to his supporters saying he cannot protect them enough.
Agyapong’s decision comes on the back of a violent incident where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed during the party’s ‘Thank You’ tour.
The victim, affiliated to the University’s Unity Hall (Continentals), and a member of the Hall’s Jama group, had been contracted by Ken Agyapong’s team to perform at the Bantama Pentecost Church where the party was holding an event.
According to the team, a friend of Ken Agyapong who was at the event gave GHC1,000.00 to the jama group. But, a group of heavily built gun-wielding men believed to be affiliated with the party allegedly demanded that the money be given to them.
They forcibly took the money from the jama group, according to team Agyapong’s allegations, leading to the row which led to the stabbing of the student.
It is also reported that some gunshots were fired during the chaos, before the stabbing took place.
The victim was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving treatment.
Mr. Agyapong, also a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central region, lodged an official complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command following the incident.
Addressing the media Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Mr. Agyapong confirmed that he has withdrawn from the tour since he cannot vouch for the security of his team.
He says he had joined the party’s 2024 flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the tour for peace sake, but has had to withdraw to protect his supporters whose safety cannot be guaranteed under the circumstances.
“Because of what [happened] yesterday, myself and my team want to pull out because lives are threatened, I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr Bawumia can do his campaign,” he stated.
