The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is not independent minded to lead the party, founding member, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has averred.

He says the state of the NPP after its humiliating defeat in the December 2024 elections requires a leader who possesses the tenacity to make decisions that will help the party, irrespective of the consequences.

According to Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, lacks the traits of the kind of leadership needed to put the pieces back together to save the NPP.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues Sunday, May 4, 2025, the NPP founding member quoted from a book he has written that he never saw Dr. Bawumia exhibiting any trait worthy of saving the NPP from its current state.

He maintained that the party needs a leader who can implement tough decisions without being deterred by the consequences, if they serve the party’s interest.

“What we need is a leader with courage and the will to break free from political patronage who can make tough decisions even when they are unpopular and can go against the grain of his own party’s entrenched interest.

“I am not convinced that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shown that level of resolve. Throughout his time as Vice President and the Head of the Economic Management Team, Bawumia’s track record has not demonstrated the kind of independent mindedness or tenacity we need right now,” he stated.

Although the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has impressive credentials as a technocrat, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe says Dr. Bawumia’s tenure as Vice President was marked by a lack of decisive action and independence.

He explained that the nature of Ghana’s environment cannot accommodate leaders like Dr. Bawumia, who lack the courage to take strong decisions.

“He has the intellect and the technocratic know-how. But being a technocrat is not necessarily translated into effective leadership, especially in a complex and politically charged environment like ours,” he stated.
